I’ll tell you what.
I’m an immigrant African woman myself (West Africa, like the OP) and I have a french accent ( thank you French colonizers !!!). Was raised in French culture all my life, even moved to France for undergrad before coming to the US for my Masters degree. Funny thing is I stayed in Boston my first 6 months in the country. There I wasn’t really looking to date anyone since I just arrived and was trying to get acclimated to American Culture. However, I noticed that it was much easier to connect with educated students from overseas than with any American White Man/Woman in general ( when I had no pb doing it France) so I chalked it up to cultural differences, even though it seems those foreign kids were more prepared to meeting/dating diverse since they were not in their own country.
Why would the OP (or myself) have more in common with a “white person” in general?
Indeed there are big differences between African and African American. Some African people have more European culture and exposure to the world than many AA. I have had a good education and lived for extended periods of time abroad. I like my wine, my foreign films ( though not so foreign to me) and my indie Rock and electronic music. The experiences are just different. Sadly, those opportunities in the US are rarely accessible to the AA population, and even then it would be via a stint in the Army. It is therefore difficult to relate to AA culture ( just like it is difficult for them to relate to mine) but I try;
