I do agree that being a westerner with manners, money, a waist, and a disinclination to get shitfaced every night makes even a ‘mature man’ very attractive in eastern Europe. I have thought about spending six months in one of the Baltics to investigate further. But this too is somewhat pathetic: once a man, and I am not usually ranked a loser in most of life’s activities, invests his soul in a woman, that soul is changed: it doesn’t restore itself like perennials in spring. “I’m not h-a-a-a-p-p-y” divorce is all around us, should we choose to notice it, and we do notice it once we’ve experienced one or two.
Meanwhile, the Russian-native college professor, who lives next door in a small and obscure (read: gossipy and all-seeing/all-knowing) town is emailing me from her parents’ dacha this month, while her sap husband struggles to pack and move an entire household. She’s complaining to me about him. She’d been visiting me unannounced (read: while I’m in a robe and boxers) for the past month “just to check on you.” Investment required, had I wished to explode her marriage and ruin her devoted husband for life? A glass of wine, a quick joke and some sympathetic praise for her awesomeness.
So my thoughts this summer have been on finding a post-red pill model, one more constructive than a life of breezy plate-spinning and interesting, sincere serial monogamy with good women who are desperate to be courted and married (again). One insight I think I’ve achieved: if we give vent to our romantic impulse (which is so much stronger than that of a woman), we risk turning a modestly appealing woman into a Unicorn of the Mind. And then we are done. There are no unicorns.
