Craig, I do see where you’re going, but to LaRubia ’s credit, she also said “uneducated” and wasn’t passing judgment solely on income. It sounds like your fiancee has equivalent education to yours (if not more, since it probably took her longer to get two masters than for you to go to law school). If someone has an equivalent level of education, but is working in a job or field that pays less income, it’s a different dynamic than when the income disparity is primarily or solely due to the education and/or class differences.
And despite the gains women have made in the workplace, I think it’s much more likely to do so when a woman makes significantly more than the man — given that a number of men were raised to factor their income and educational achievements as a significant component of self-worth, and were raised in traditional families where the man supported the family. So while I see where you’re going with your hypothetical, Craig — it’s just as common if not more so that a lawyer in your firm would prefer to date the legal secretary over a female attorney, who might have equivalent income and education, but would be working the same long and stressful hours and might end up competing with him for advancement in the firm.
